The March to Magdala By G. A. Henty
The March to Magdala G A Henty Books
An interesting account of a little known colonial campaign in 1868 by a journalist who accompanied the British troops. I have read Philip Marsden's The Barefoot Emperor: an Ethiopian Tragedy which is a modern account of the campaign which draws heavily on Henty. As Henty himself confesses, much of the campaign was getting from the coast to Magdala. The one-sided battle last just a few hours & the campaign was over, so most of Henty's account is the hardships he, and the soldiers, experienced in the hrsh Abyssinian terrain. He is also very scathing about the 'military organisation, or lack of it, particular when it comes to handling the animals. A good contemporary account. Henty is better known for his rip-roaring 'Boys Own' yarns.Product details

The March to Magdala G A Henty Books Reviews
It is not a good read. Sorry, I like history and can read some tedious things, but this was a bit much.
Excellent read.
I love GA Henty works. this one is a little slow compared to other ones but still interesting historical standpoint
At first I was puzzled as I read the book. It just isn't the usual Henty style, having a teen aged hero tying in with recorded history. A little investigation showed that the book is of Henty's actual reports as a war correspondent during the British Abyssinia campaign. It became more interesting then, as it is an eye-sight report rather than something taken from other records of the time embellished and with fictional additions.
